Thanks Mike, but I know about those pics, they are Very low quality and don't show well on 'full screen'. Those pics are when IB was in Victoria BC.

Thanks,
I got this one allready, its to small and can't be expanded to Full screen size.
The name refers to the "View" of Megayachts that I see docking outmywindow in Coal Harbour BC.

Hi Raphael - Ashoka is my boat's name, so it seemed logical to use it for my nickname here. I've not had anything to send you lately since it's been a very slow year for boat spotting in Seattle! Ice Bear is really the last intersting thing I've seen in town.

She would look much nicer without the gym or the observation lounge (or whatever it is) on the top deck.Terrible!

 Re: Re: (Ashoka)

Is this the same "Ice Bear" that used to owned or still is by Bill Gates? Somehow I remember it being said on a TV show a long time ago.

Bill Gates and his yachts have been mentioned earlier at different places on this forum. Based on posted comments it seems like most yachts afloat have, in one way or another, been connected to dr Phill... sorry, Mr. Bill.
So far I have however not heard any credible source (read someone on this forum) state that they have confirmed links between him and any yacht at all. Maybe he suffers from seasickness or thinks that it is more convenient to borrow a yacht from his buddy Mr. Allen's fleet?

 Re: Re: (outmywindow)

Ice Bear is not owner by Bill Gates. As all of us know rumours can spread about yachts and their owners like wild fire. Lets get this one straight.

The original owner was Mr.Moran in florida. It was launched in 1988 at 167'. He owned it from 1988 - 1994. It was then sold to Canadian Business man Bruce Branch who spent alot of money on her refit ;to name a few things, 6 foot extension on her stern, added bell jet ranger, added 2 VIP staterooms, aft deck reconstruction... He owned her from 1995 - 1999.

That year it was sold to Walter Scott from Seattle, who still owns her and was behind the major refit which resulted in her drastic physical change. The refit was done at Foss tugs in Seattle.... is she still a feadship after that surgery????.........
The reason for the varied listings of her length is because Mr. Scotts extension was yet another 4 feet which came with the addtion of a different swim platform. So between the three owners there was 3 different legnths.

I have numerous pictures of this beautiful yacht before and after the refit. What a difference. And FYI the top deck is a sky lounge not a gym. enjoy the pics and let me know what you think !

Can that be safe to have the helicopter blocking the view ahead from the bridge? ...or is the helipad used only for touch-and-go operations?

I've had a couple of mediocre shots of Onika on webshots for awhile so i don't know why you couldn't find them, but here there are:

Those horrible shots posted earlier of Ice Bear were regrettably, taken by me as well.

 Re: (Jimmy)

The chopper did not obstruct the view at all. Its only 8 feet at its widest and it was positioned off to the starboard side of the foredeck that was nearly 32 feet wide. Its quite a sight to see the chopper take off and land.
Also a really neat feature on her was the elevating fordeck which had a tender garage beneath it for 2 tenders. The also elevated for take offs and landings aswell.

Where were the two VIP staterooms added during the first refit? I'm guessing the upper deck since the orginal dining salon there was enormous.

 Re: (dbowman78)

The two VIP stateroom additions where actually done in the original four guest staterooms. They where cleverly made to be able to convert into 2 huge staterooms or 4 individual rooms. They reconfigured the walls and closets to be able to open up and become a bedroom with seperate sitting room and his and her baths. This was a great option from a charter perspective. The 22 seat dining salon was not removed until Mr.Scott did his refit on the boat. Its unfortunate that so much of the boat has been ripped up and changed.

 Re: (Yacht Master)

Ice Bear is a funny yacht because it's like that old jalopy that has had so many changes done to it over the years it's hardly recognizable from it's original look. Mind you, i doubt there are too many jalopies i would like to ride around in more than this one. I don't think it ever looked better than when it was Royal Pacific with the chopper on the front, even though it was slightly smaller back then. So ironic too, since refits usually result in the yacht looking better, not worse. According to yachtspotter.com (who is usually meticulous about his website) though, none of those extensions ever took place since he has feadship's original length listed of 167 feet here; http://www.yachtspotter.com/ys...80114

This is probably the most confusing Feadship ever launched.

I have for Ice Bear a LOA 53.95m so about 176'10'' correct me if I'm wrong

Adding further to the confusion, the LOA I got from Feadship after the refit is 173'0".

 Re: (Yachtdreamer)

Yachtdreamer, that length jives with what yacht master said above, and i've seen that LOA before, so i'm sure it's right.

All i can deduce from that ^ is that Feadship must have authorized or done the first refit/extension to get it from 167' to 173', but not the the second refit/extension, which is where the yacht sits today at 177' (or 176'10" more precisely). Otherwise Feadship would have probably listed it at 177'.

Thanks for all that info yacht master, you cleared up much of the confusion with your post, but if this yacht gets any more changes done to it, i say we petition Feadship to write a book on it. Failing that, i say we hand the whole thing over to Stephen Hawking to figure out. If Stephen Hawking can't even figure it out, we should lobby congress to pass the "Ice Bear Act" that forbids any changes hereafter to the yacht.

Thanks for Your reply, Yacht Master! May I ask, were landings/take offs being done under way, or only when lying still? I still think it looks a bit daring position of the helicopter in front of the bridge, but I trust your words.

 Ice Bear on Lake Union

The Ice Bear stopped on Seattle's Lake Union this morning. From my deck, I saw her moored about 50 yards from the Sleepless in Seattle houseboat & the Boeing company yacht Daedalus.

Magnificent!

Re: Ice Bear on Lake Union (blackhook)

Ice Bear usually moors there (by Signature Yachts) all winter and spends a good amount of time up in Sitka during the summer. Fun to see her and Daedalus together there though. Speaking of large yachts (hey, it's Seattle. Ice Bear and Daedalus are large for us!), Apoise is still berthed over at Elliot Bay marina. She's a pretty big boat to see around here (well, save Laurel, of course..).

To Yachtdreamer and others:

The Ice Bear is docked at Nanaimo, BC. I have a 4.5 Meg shot of her coming in. How do I get it to you as the site only allows 200K pix.

when you look at the above picture [posted last year], what does it say about design and how we judge newly launched yachts?
