 Delta Yacht Builder

I was recently browsing through a magazine and saw an advertisement for Delta, in which it lists 3 or 4 large builds in the 1920's and 1930's including Delphine, and then it shows the steel bow for a 240ft newbuild.
Two questions, wasn't Delphine built by Great Lakes Shipyard?
And, does anyone have info on the 240' new yacht?

 Re: Delta Yacht Builder (Chitown)

I can answer the first question. Delphine was built by Great Lakes Engineering Works in 1921 for Horace Dodge. I don't know about the new build.

 Re: Delta Yacht Builder (Chitown)

You are right that Delta did not build Delphine, and neither did they build any of the other yachts mentioned. I remember seeing that ad too, and I think they just mentioned a few milestones in American yacht building history. As for the 240 footer, little seems to be known. The subject was touched at the yachtspotter forum, check posts 39-41 http://www.yachtspotter.com/focard2.php?foo=F030

 Re: Delta Yacht Builder (Chitown)

Delta Marine was founded in the early 1960's and - as pointed out - didn't build any yachts until about 1990. In the advertisement Delta Marine isn't claiming its roots way back but simply lists a couple of earlier US builds that were chosen to illustrate US yacht building tradition and innovation.

The yachts are 1853 North Star, 1884 Electra, 1917 Isabelle, 1921 Delphine and 1931 Caroline.

The Delta Marine 240ft is a Donald Starkey design that I'm interested in seeing very soon. It will be the "first steel hull with composite superstructure" and the "largest yacht built in the US since the early 1930's".

Re: Delta Yacht Builder (Andy Lindy)

Are there any known pictures of this yachts (except Delphine), 1853 is a bit old but maybe for the others there was a chance to make a photo?

BTW, is that the North Star that was built for Vanderbilt?

 Re: Delta Yacht Builder (An'Lyn)

The 1853 North Star is indeed the yacht built for Cornelius Vanderbilt when he decided to go to Europe for the first ever vacation of his life - he was then almost 60 years old! North Star was the first steam yacht to be built in the US.

As for pictures - I think a picture serach of the web will give some results. Otherwise these yachts would be pictured in books about classic yachts.

It's been a while since we've discussed the 240-footer Delta has been building. Here's the latest news:

 Re: (carewser)

She's a great looking boat, that's for sure. With her (what appears to be...) tan and white house, though, I doubt she'll be confused for another. Since Delta's shakedowns usually take the newbuilds north, I'm sure you'll be seeing her soon, Carewser. If not Bill Gates', it must be Paul Allen's...

 Re: (yachtie360)

I've heard more yachts been called Bill Gates' than I can recall...

Mr. Gates is #1 on the billionaires list, but I don't think he's even owned a mega yacht.....

Does anyone agree or disagree with me?

 Re: (V65)

As for the tonnage, gross tons is actually a volume measurement, so her displacement (weight) could very well be 1200 tons.

 Re: (Johan_)

As Johan said gross tonnage is a measure of interior volume, it has little to do with displacement or "weight".
Delta's first yacht was "Zopilote" a 70 foot trawler built on a Delta commercial hull. "Zopilote" circumnavigated and was later sunk in SE Alaska. She has been raised and refitted under a new name. "Life of Riley" was built as "Pizazz" (sp) a 127 footer which was stretched to 132 at the Delta yard.

 Re: Laurel

she does have very conservative styling. more recently, designs have some strange shapes & proportions along with misleading (if not tacky) sheers. deck supports can help to displace the weight over the length. she looks like a gem to manage and keep clean.

I took several pictures of the LAUREL at her launching.... she was loaded onto a barge at Delta and taken to Anacortes,Wa (100 water miles north) where she was transfered to a Synco-Lift at Dakota Creek Industries for launching...

She has a steel hull which was built by Dakota Creek Ind. for Delta.....Delta and Dakota Creek worked together once previously on a 165' aluminum hull.

After launching she was immediately taken in tow and returned to Delta that same day...

pretty hush-hush around the launching as everyone wanted to know who the owner might be.... speculation was Bill Gates, but he's not into boat toys and he has access to any of Allen's boats.

The owner is said to be in his 80's...

I have a couple pic's I'll post....that picture link above is a good shot.... thats at Delta in Seattle

A friend at Delta told me that they are working with a customer on a 400' boat next...

 Re: (Alaskan)

A 400 footer? Refit maybe, but I seriously doubt a new-build of that size is in the works at the Delta site, unless they build yet another building (which is possible, since they have the land). However, they don't even have 400 feet of warf unless they get rid of the adjacent marina. Laurel is a great step forward in Delta's bright future. The next few years are going to be fun to watch!

Iam hearing that the 400 is new construction...and Delta just recently purchased 25 additional acres to expand on along the Duwamish..

Those not familiar with Dakota Creek might enjoy a tour...they have the building large enough to build a 400 hull inside.

http://www.dakotacreek.com/website/

They have a new construction launch this weekend...the 198' Stikine for IFA Prince of Wales Island, Alaska.

I took these pictures yesterday....

There is room for a helicopter to land on the aft deck, but this is not the intention. They have fitted removable rails to enable a chopper to land if required. The yacht has been fitted with Quantum 'zero speed' stabilizers similar to those fitted to Pelorus. Not sure about the blue/cream paint job....

I like the blue but I think it's a shame they decided on the cream - maybe in better light it will add depth. Where's Yachtspotter's pics? !

Hello all,
I was at the Air and Sea Show in Ft Lauderdale on May 7 and got a few shots of Laurel hanging about a mile off the beach, taking in the sights and sounds. Check this link for photos of Laurel and some of the aircrafts and ships:

Note the exotic flag - Marshall Islands.
The Marshall Islands corporate and maritime registries are outsourced to International Registries, Inc. (IRI):
http://www.register-iri.com
Private and commercial yachts registered in the Marshall Islands have the choice between Jaluit or Bikini as a homeport. I believe Excellence III has Jaluit, Triton Bikini.
